16. Sick of life
The first thing she did was call Jordan. After
all, she had yet no idea who was Ray's mother. At least she had some clue of
who to get in contact with. The man surely was glad she had been there to look
after the kid, and he was even happier Sam could carry him to the nearest
hospital. He promised he would call his mother and that they'd be there in no
time.
And so she arrived to the big, pragmatic
building, built in the middle of a calm street. It wasn't as though the city
was too noisy, anyway. Without saying a word, fearing to break the serene
atmosphere, the woman helped the child out of the car and moved towards the
entrance.
Half an hour later, they finally called them
in, but Jordan and the mother were nowhere to be seen. She swallowed her unease
and couldn't help but notice that the little boy was not impressed at all by
this fact. It must've been terrible, she thought, remembering her own mother.
Despite everything, what would she give to have her by her side once more...
They had already cleaned the wound and made
sure no bone was seriously injured - it was just a sprain, they said - when they
heard some commotion outside the clinic. The doctor went outside for a split
second and came back followed by a woman who seemed like a storm, rather than a
person.
'James Raymond Bentley, how many times shall I
tell you not to wander off on your own!'
Those were the first words she ever heard from
Hilary Bentley.
After the incident, the family invited her to a
coffee shop near the hospital. The boy's mother didn't look very pleased with
the idea at first, but Jordan convinced her. Not in vain, it had been Samantha
who got her injured son out of the streets.

Disrupting the steady scenario, she pulled a cigarette
out of a box and lit it with a fire. A tiny gray cloud began to dance towards
the sky, as if it were happy to finally be free. Sam watched her in silence
before saying: 'It's not a very good habit to smoke, especially if you live
with children. I've met a lot of asthmatic children whose parents do so. Excuse
my insolence, if you may,' she quickly added, noticing too late her lack of
tact.
It was not a surprise that the other woman's
face showed no sign of forgiveness. In fact, it showed mostly an overwhelming
irritation. Still, she put down the cigarette for a little while longer than
what Sam expected. It was surprising to find she might felt guilty.
'Samantha Cardigan it is then, right?' The
voice sounded sick of everything. Sick of the people, sick of the air. Sick of
life. However, when Hilary turned to look at her, there was a slight hint of
fun in her gaze. 'I've been told you've been looking for some Julia person.'
